What happens in a typical hypnotherapy session?

A session is roughly divided into three parts:
  1. The first involves conversation between the client and the therapist - in solution-focussed hypnotherapy this will be very positive.
  2. The client is then led to a greater understanding of how their difficulties arose in terms of brain function and physiology, and therefore how they can begin resolving them and regain control.
  3. Finally the client will be placed into a trance (see ëWhat is tranceí below). It is whilst in trance that clients begin to find solutions and ways of improving their lives.

I may utilise additional techniques and therapies, where these are in the best interests of the client.

Does Hypnosis Work? A Comparison Study by: Dorothy M. Neddermeyer, PhD

  • Psychoanalysis: 38% recovery after 600 sessions
  • Behavior Therapy: 72% recovery after 22 sessions
  • Hypnotherapy: 93% recovery after 6 sessions

What is trance?

Trance is a natural state. All human beings dip into trance approximately every 7 minutes. We go into trance whenever we daydream or when we search our memory.

During a hypnotherapy session a trance is induced when the client becomes relaxed and focussed on the voice of the hypnotherapist.

Positive suggestions, short stories and guided imagery are used during a trance session. It is impossible for the hypnotherapist to make you do anything that you donít want to do whilst you are in trance.

Enough studies have now accumulated to suggest that the inclusion of hypnotic procedures may be beneficial in the management and treatment of a wide range of conditions and problems encountered in the practice of medicine, psychiatry and psychotherapy. In many cases, however, the relative contribution of factors specific to hypnosis is as yet unclear, and often the influence on outcome of the measured hypnotic susceptibility of the patients is small or insignificant.

Two things that solution-focused hypnotherapy is not:

  • It is not stage hypnosis - you will not be made to perform silly tricks.
  • It is not hypno-analysis - we will not be examining your deep unconscious to discover long forgotten memories.

Three things solution-focused hypnotherapy is:

  • It is forward looking - you will be deciding where you want to go and we will be working together to get you there.
  • It is positive - the focus is always on how to make you happier, more content and better fulfilled.
  • It is effective - you will see improvement even after your first session
