What is trauma?

Many situations in life can result in serious trauma. It could be domestic incidents, such as parental or spousal violence. In might include sexual assaults or rape. The sudden death of someone close to us, particularly if through murder or suicide, can have a traumatic effect upon us. We can become traumatised by incidents in our work particularly if we work in a field such as policing, the military or emergency medical care. Or we might be suddenly caught up in a violent situation such as a rail crash or motor accident.

Recognising the impact of trauma

If you are reading this there is a reasonable chance that you have experienced one of these or similar situations and are struggling to move on from it. Perhaps you are having nightmares about it or find yourself going over and over it. Maybe you are finding it hard to have normal relationships with people and struggling to find any pleasure in life. Perhaps you have developed restrictive fears and phobias, or obsessive behaviours.

If it was something you experienced in your childhood you may feel that it still has an unreasonably large influence on your life, limiting and restricting you. (See my article "Is it Possible to Move Beyond Childhood Trauma".)

It doesn't have to be this way. You can move on from this and reclaim your life, returning to the person you were before or the person you were meant to be.

Hypnotherapy can certainly help PTSD... it is vital to see a well trained and experienced counsellor and hypnotherapist for trauma based syndromes. PTSD is a difficult and debilitating psychological condition... a relatively new inclusion to the Diagnostic and Statistic Manual...

Chew Valley Hypnotherapy can help with trauma

Therapy for trauma occurs in three phases - stress/anxiety reduction; removal and fragmentation of memories; regaining control of life.

Phase one

Help with trauma has to begin by reducing stress and anxiety in the individual. Hypnosis is amazingly powerful at facilitating a return to a more peaceful state. Once you are able to feel more relaxed, returning to a healthier sleep pattern and a calmer way of being, we will be able to tackle the actual experiences which caused so much distress.

Phase two

These days we understand a considerable amount about the functioning of the brain and how memories are created and stored. This knowledge can help us to understand the creation of trauma, and also the best approaches for releasing us from these memories. Research now demonstrates unequivocally that re-living traumatic incident actually reinforces and embeds them. Instead what we need to do is use techniques to move the memories away from the emotional areas of the brain, and up into the neo-cortex where we can review them without distress. I have various techniques that I utilise to this end, bringing you a freedom and relief.

Phase three

It is important to continue to work with me once the impact of the memory is removed, in order to ensure that you are in a really strong place and can be protected from a return of the negative behaviour. I will also use my skills in solution-focused hypnotherapy to help you to reconstruct your life, moving beyond the effects of the trauma and regaining control. This means you will be able to find your path and make positive choices for your future unimpeded by these negative experiences.
